How the Remote NIE Process Works (Power of Attorney)

Key facts
  • Yes — you can get a NIE without travelling to Spain, through a power of attorney (poder notarial).
  • The POA is notarised in your country, apostilled, and sworn-translated into Spanish.
  • A representative in Spain then files the application and sends you the NIE certificate.
  • We prepare a limited POA — scoped to authorise only the NIE application, nothing else.

The remote route lets a representative obtain your NIE in Spain on your behalf, so you never have to attend in person. It rests on a long-standing principle of Spanish administrative law: a non-resident may act through an authorised representative under a valid power of attorney. Here is how the process works, end to end.

The process in four steps

StepWhat happens
1. Power of attorneyYou sign a limited poder notarial authorising a representative to apply for your NIE.
2. ApostilleThe POA is legalised with a Hague Apostille (or via the Spanish consulate if your country is not in the Convention).
3. Sworn translationA traductor jurado translates the POA into Spanish.
4. FilingYour representative submits the application in Spain and emails you the issued NIE certificate.

Each step is explained in detail below.

Understand each step

Who uses the remote route

It suits anyone who needs a NIE but cannot easily travel or wait for a consulate appointment — property buyers, investors, company founders and heirs. It produces the white non-resident NIE certificate, which is enough for property, banking and tax. Prefer to compare all options first? See the three ways to apply.

Frequently asked questions

Can I really get a NIE without going to Spain?
Yes. A representative can apply on your behalf under a notarised, apostilled and sworn-translated power of attorney.
Does the power of attorney give away control?
No. It is limited to applying for your NIE; it does not grant any wider authority over your affairs.
How long does the remote route take?
Typically a couple of weeks to about a month from signing the power of attorney, depending on document turnaround.
