The White NIE: Non-Resident NIE Certificate Explained

Key facts
  • The “white NIE” is the non-resident NIE certificate — a white A4 paper document with your NIE on it.
  • It is what most foreigners get when they just need the number (no residency).
  • It contains the NIE number; the number never expires.
  • It is not a residence document — for residence you need the green certificate (EU) or a TIE (non-EU).

The white NIE is the standard non-resident NIE certificate. If you need a NIE to buy property, open a bank account or handle taxes — without becoming a resident — this white A4 document is what you receive. See how it compares with the green certificate and the other documents in our Spanish IDs comparison.

Why it’s called “white”

  • White = non-resident NIE certificate (the number, nothing more).
  • Green = EU resident registration certificate — see the green NIE.

What it is used for

The white NIE is enough for most one-off transactions:

  • buying or selling property and paying the related taxes;
  • opening a (non-resident) bank account;
  • inheritance, vehicle purchase, or a non-resident mortgage.

See the full list in when and why you need a NIE.

Validity and renewal

The NIE number itself is permanent. Older white certificates carried a 3-month validity for the document, but that deadline was removed — certificates issued now have no expiry date (a few notaries may still query very old ones). This is the source of most “renewal” confusion — clarified in does a NIE expire and renewing your NIE.

Most non-residents obtain the white NIE remotely — see how to get your NIE online.
