The White NIE: Non-Resident NIE Certificate Explained

What it is used for
The white NIE is enough for most one-off transactions:
- buying or selling property and paying the related taxes;
- opening a (non-resident) bank account;
- inheritance, vehicle purchase, or a non-resident mortgage.

Validity and renewal
The NIE number itself is permanent. Older white certificates carried a 3-month validity for the document, but that deadline was removed — certificates issued now have no expiry date (a few notaries may still query very old ones).
