Does a NIE Expire? Validity Explained
- No — the NIE number never expires. It is assigned to you for life.
- What can carry a date is the paper certificate or the TIE card, not the number.

Your NIE number does not expire — it is permanent. Once Spain assigns you a NIE, that number is yours forever and is reused across every future procedure. Number vs document
- The NIE number: permanent, never expires, never changes.
- The non-resident (white) certificate: older certificates carried a 3-month validity for the document, but that deadline was removed — certificates issued now bear no expiry date, and the number was always permanent. (A few notaries may still query a certificate older than 3 months.) See the white NIE.
- The TIE card (non-EU residents): expires with your residence permit and is renewed as part of immigration, not the NIE itself.
So what does “renewing a NIE” mean?
Usually one of two things: renewing a TIE card, or obtaining a fresh certificate showing the same number. You are not issued a new NIE. More in renewing your NIE.
