Lost Your NIE? How to Find Your NIE Number

Key facts
  • Your NIE is permanent — if you lose the paper, you recover the number, not reapply.
  • It appears on your NIE certificate, TIE card, green certificate, padrón, and tax/bank documents.
  • You can request an official certificate of your existing NIE again if needed.
  • There is no public name-based lookup for privacy reasons.

If you have lost your NIE number, you do not apply for a new one — you retrieve the one you already have. Here is where to find it, and how to get an official copy.

Where your NIE number appears

  • Your original white NIE certificate (the resolución) — see the white NIE.
  • Your TIE card or green EU certificate, if you have one.
  • Padrón (town-hall registration), tax filings, and many bank or contract documents.
  • Emails from the representative who obtained it for you.

Not sure what the number should look like? See the NIE format and example.

If you cannot find it anywhere

You can request an official certificate of your existing NIE again (the number does not change) from the issuing authority or through a representative. This is a re-issue of documentation, not a new NIE. For the wider context, see managing your NIE and renewing your NIE.

Why there’s no public lookup

For data-protection reasons, no website lets you look up a NIE by name or passport. Anyone offering that should be treated with caution. The legitimate route is always through your own records or an official re-issue.

Frequently asked questions

I lost my NIE — do I reapply?
No. The number is yours for life. You recover it from your documents or request an official certificate again.
Where can I find my NIE number?
On your NIE certificate, TIE card, green certificate, padrón, or tax and bank documents.
Can I look up a NIE online by name?
No. There is no public name-based lookup; that would breach data protection.
