Do You Need to Renew Your NIE in Spain?

Key facts
  • The NIE number is never renewed — it is permanent and assigned for life.
  • What is renewed is the TIE card (non-EU residents), which expires with the residence permit.
  • The green EU certificate does not expire either; you may request a fresh copy if needed.
  • You can request a new certificate showing the same number at any time.

You do not renew a NIE number — it never expires. The phrase “NIE renewal” almost always refers to renewing a physical document, not the number itself. Here’s exactly what does and doesn’t need renewing.

What actually gets renewed

ItemRenewed?How
NIE numberNeverIt is permanent

White non-resident certificateNot requiredRequest a fresh copy if a body asks for a recent one
Green EU certificateNo expiryRequest a duplicate if lost/damaged

Why people think the NIE expires

Older non-resident certificates carried a 3-month validity for the document, which was later removed. The number was always permanent — only that paper had a date. A few notaries may still ask for a certificate issued within the last 3 months, in which case you simply request a fresh one. More in does a NIE expire.

Need a fresh certificate?

If an authority or notary wants a recently issued certificate of your existing NIE, it can be requested again (the number stays the same). If you have misplaced your number entirely, see how to find a lost NIE number. For an overview of post-application steps, see managing your NIE.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Spanish NIE need renewing?
No. The NIE number is permanent and never expires; only a TIE card is renewed.
My certificate is old — is my NIE still valid?
Yes. The number remains valid for life. If a body wants a recent certificate, request a fresh copy of the same number.
How do I renew a TIE card?
A TIE is renewed through immigration alongside your residence permit, not as a NIE renewal.
