What Is a NIE Number? Definition, Format and Uses

A NIE is the personal identification and tax number that Spain assigns to foreigners. What does NIE stand for?
NIE is short for Número de Identificación de Extranjero, which translates as “Foreigner Identification Number”. It is issued by the Spanish authorities (through the Dirección General de la Policía) and is unique to you for life.
What is a NIE used for?
The NIE identifies you in every interaction with Spanish administration and is required to:
- buy, sell or own property;
- open a Spanish bank account;
- sign an employment contract or become self-employed (autónomo);
- pay Spanish taxes (it acts as your NIF);
- accept an inheritance, buy a vehicle, or arrange a non-resident mortgage.

What a NIE is not
