Is Getting a NIE Remotely Legal and Safe?

Key facts
  • Yes — it is legal. Spanish administrative law lets a non-resident act through an authorised representative.
  • The authority is a limited power of attorney — only for the NIE, nothing else.
  • The same NIE is issued by the Spanish authorities; the representative only submits the application.
  • Stay safe: use a firm with verifiable identity, a limited POA, and clear pricing.

Getting a NIE remotely is a legitimate, well-established procedure. It does not bypass any rule — the number is still assigned by the Spanish authorities; a representative simply files the paperwork for you under a power of attorney.

Why it’s legal

Spanish administrative procedure expressly allows a person to act through a representative. For a NIE, you grant a limited power of attorney, which is apostilled and sworn-translated. The representative then applies on your behalf — the assignment itself is made by the Dirección General de la Policía, exactly as for an in-person application.

How to stay safe

  • Limited POA only: it should authorise the NIE application and nothing more.
  • Identifiable provider: a real company with a registered name and licence.
  • Transparent steps and costs: you should see the government fee and the service fee separately — see what it costs.
  • No “lookup by name” offers: nobody can legitimately retrieve a NIE by name — see finding a lost NIE.
