Do You Need a NIE to Work in Spain?

Key facts
  • Yes — you need a NIE to be employed and registered for social security.
  • The NIE is not the same as the right to work: non-EU citizens also need a work authorisation/permit.
  • EU citizens can work but still register and obtain their NIE (green certificate).

A NIE is required to take up employment in Spain — your employer needs it to register you with social security and run payroll. But holding a NIE alone does not grant permission to work.

NIE vs the right to work

  • NIE: the identification/tax number used on your contract and social security record.
  • Right to work: for non-EU citizens this comes from a work/residence authorisation; for EU citizens it is automatic, with EU registration (the green certificate).

See the distinction between documents in NIE vs NIF vs TIE.

Self-employed?

If you plan to freelance or run a business rather than be employed, see NIE to become autonomo or start a company. To get the number, see how to get your NIE online.
