Visa in Portugal for digital nomads

Portugal had launched a Digital nomad or entrepreneur visa for those with a location-independent job. If you’re seeking a beautiful place to live with a low cost of living, great weather, and a superb location for travel, Portugal is waiting for you. Here’s your guide to living in Portugal as a digital nomad, freelancer, or remote worker.

Remote workers who make at least €2820 a month can apply to Portugal's new 'digital-nomad visa' starting October 30.
The Portugal Digital Nomad Visa is divided into two categories.
  • Temporary Stay Visa
The temporary stay visa is a great fit if you want to try out Portugal for a short time (but longer than the 90 day Schengen tourist allowance), without committing to becoming a long-term resident
  • Residence Visa
This option is for remote workers who prefer a longer stay in Portugal, with the goal of getting residency.
It’s also suitable for those who want to start their journey towards Portuguese citizenship.

Visas Available for Digital Nomads

Like other European countries, Portugal has announced a specific visa program for digital nomads, entrepreneurs, freelancers, or remote workers. However, the Digital nomad visa — also known as the entrepreneur visa — is likely the best route for anyone who has a location-independent income outside of Portugal.

The Digital nomad visa is valid for two entries and allows the holder to stay in Portugal for an initial 4-month period, assuming they don’t qualify for a regular 90-day tourist visa.

However, after that 4-month period expires, the Digital nomad visa also allows you to obtain a residence permit in Portugal for two years. Following this period, you can renew your visa for another 3 years. Following this, you can obtain a permanent residence permit after 5 years.

If you’re interested in living in Portugal on a medium to long-term basis, then you should consider the Digital nomad visa.
